Definition
A WSI sets out the aims, methods, staffing, reporting and archiving for a programme of archaeological work.
Who approves it
The local planning authority, advised by its archaeological advisor, approves the WSI before fieldwork begins.
Why it matters
An approved WSI is usually a requirement of an archaeological planning condition. Work carried out without one may not count towards discharging the condition.
