What it is
A watching brief is archaeological monitoring of groundworks, so any remains can be identified and recorded as they are exposed.
When it is used
It is common where the potential for archaeology is uncertain or moderate, or where groundworks are limited.

Give your archaeologist notice of dates, allow time for recording if remains appear, and share drawings so monitoring can be targeted.
