A building survey and photographic record traced the changing power systems of a former woollen spinning mill dating from 1834.
MAP undertook a building survey and photographic record of a former woollen spinning mill at New Mill, West Yorkshire. The original mill dated to 1834.
Historical sources record that the mill was initially powered by a waterwheel and then by a steam engine from 1856. Following fire damage in 1861, it was rebuilt as a four-storey mill.
A large engine house built in the early twentieth century removed evidence of the earlier power systems. The survey nevertheless identified remains of external power drives and three phases of internal rope drives.
